Babylon Burning [Another Lovely War] June 2006

Building on the smash success of 2005's Black Sun Over Genoa, this year’s Theatre Workshop Edinburgh community play Babylon Burning [Another Lovely War] was another politically uncompromising docu-drama. This well researched and authoritative play took an uncompromising stance on the escalating war in Iraq set against the backdrop of a Washington in thrall to an unelected, neo-conservative cabal.

With a 100-strong cast, Babylon Burning combined popular song, dance and music, documentary photography and film, an ensemble of musicians, heightened theatricality and political satire, together with real life experiences of combatants and civilians.

Babylon Burning is an unflinching yet compassionate theatrical examination of contemporary Iraq where life is a currency being exchanged daily for oil.  A powerful and compelling production which evoked an emotional response to the conflict in Iraq today.

Black Sun Over Genoa 2005

Theatre Workshops 2005 production Black Sun over Genoa was a cultural working response to the G8 Summit taking place in Scotland this summer.

It tells the human story behind the anti – G8 Demonstrations in Genoa 2001.

Based on doccumentarty accounts, this powerful play portayed the hope, the passion, the dedication of the protestors in the face of overwhelming opposition and revealed the tragedy of a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice for his belief in a better world.

Black Sun Over Genoa was packed with the passion and spectacle of contemporary protest and includes mass choir, carnival style ‘tactical frivolity’ haunting film footage, and a huge community cast of people from all ages and backgrounds.
