Fringe 2006 - Babylon Days and Nights
Theatre Workshop’s Critically Acclaimed Iraq War Docu-Drama Babylon Burning [Another Lovely War] Inspires Hard Hitting Political Fringe Programme
Babylon Days and Nights: Hundreds of performers, seventy-three separate performances and events, thirty different shows, five art forms, only one venue; Theatre Workshop Edinburgh
Following June 2006’s sell-out run, Theatre Workshop Edinburgh is to bring critically acclaimed Iraq War docu-drama Babylon Burning [Another Lovely War] to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2006. The historic move marks the first time ever Theatre Workshop Edinburgh has reprised a production due to popular demand.
The success of the play – which played to some 1,000 people and rave reviews during its 8-night run this June – has also inspired a jam packed Fringe programme of political theatre, music, art, poetry, film and talks at Theatre Workshop Edinburgh.
Theatre Workshop producer Anne Fleming says “During the extensive research process involved in writing and producing Babylon Burning we consulted with a wide range of experts and also learned about the experiences of quite a few ‘ordinary’ people who live extraordinary lives. You can meet some of them at the Theatre Workshop this Fringe. ”
Alongside Babylon Burning [Another Lovely War], theatrical highlights include acclaimed new Scottish Theatre Group Zendeh’s Khaki. Music is well represented with Scottish folk icon and political activist Alistair Hulett among other artists due to appear. Lucy Edkin’s heart-rending portraits of so-called ‘terror’ detainees are alsobeing exhibited for the first time ever in the foyer. Daily talks, debates and screenings from a range of eminent and expert guests throw the political themes explored above into sharp and unrelenting focus.
