TWS moves to Out Of The Blue Drill
Its the start of a new era - TWS has left its Hamilton Place home and moved to the Out Of The Blue Drill Hall, where it shares resources with a host of artists, film and theatre makers. The ever rising costs of maintaining an old building in Stockbridge meant that the organisation was under a constant struggle to find enough cash to keep the building open - even before any art could be created or staff paid. The City Of Edinburgh Council, who own the building, have been incredibly supportive - but they were unable to continue to protect the historically low rents and a big increase was imminent. Constant complaints from a neighbour meant that attempts to diversify activity to raise money were not possible. TWS has had a wonderful relationship with the people of Stockbridge and we thank them for their loyal support, they know they are always welcome to join us in Dalmeny Street in Leith - as we develop new relationships locally, nationally and internationally.
TWS has undertaken a significant change process, supported by the SAC Lottery through its Transitional Organisational Development. The primary objective of the process has been to identify and develop a suitable organisational, management and staffing model for TWS, to support its transition from a building-based theatre company to, following the success of Trouble Sleeping, a joint theatre and feature film production company, and in doing so ensuring its future survival and sustainability.
The funding and policy context of the review was that TWS will increasingly develop a more diverse approach to financing creative projects. By dramatically reducing overheads TWS will be in a position to respond flexibly, creatively and competitively to new funding opportunities.
