Synopsis

This play is based on folk tales from Lapland and follows the adventures of Maddar-akka and Meandash as they try to save the village Saame Sita, where it has been winter for three years under the magic of the Ice Queen, Jabmiekha. Maddar-akka vows never to marry until her village is saved despite offers of marriage from the raven, Uldarak, the seal, Slunta and the reindeer, Meanash. The four leave Maddar-akka's vain sisters to find the Ice Queen. They journey through many places and meet many strange and wonderful creatures and spirits, including the scary old woman, Kuepekaf. Eventually they meet the Ice Queen and Meandash, Maddar-akka's beloved, is killed. However, with the help of Kuepekaf, they manage to trap the Ice Queen, bringing the sun, moon and sacred Saami drum back to the village. They are even able to bring Measdash back from the dead. This is a play that again looks at traditional tales from overseas to delight Christmas audiences.
